Tataouine
The city of Ksours
Tataouine, the city of the Ksours, nicknamed the “Gateway to the Desert”, is the hub of tourism in the south of the country. This lively city is an important step in the visit of the great Tunisian South (desert, ksours and other fortified villages).
Despite a dynamic Saharan tourism, the city retains its identity and its traditional architecture. The Tataouine region is also known throughout the world for its name, which inspired film director George Lucas in choosing the name of the planet of the sands in the film “Star Wars”. But the city is especially famous for the multitude of ksours, which date back to the 15th or 16th century, the most famous of which remains the Ksar Ouled Soltane.
The Berber villages located at the tops of the surrounding hills, such as Chenini, Douiret, Guermessa and Ghomrassen, also contribute to the charm of this region. The city of Tataouine organizes the ksour festival annually in March. Tataouine is the end of the world. Lost in the sandy mountains of southeastern Tunisia.
