Monastir Museum of Arts and Traditions

The Museum of Arts and Traditions of Monastir is located next to the Bourguiba Mosque and the tourist office of the medina.

It is a small ethnographic museum where mannequins dressed in folk costumes from all regions of Tunisia are exhibited.

The most striking room is that of the bride, which also includes jewelry and other ceremonial objects.

Also, in the Museum of Monastir, you will see the traditional costume, in particular that of women, which holds a special place.

In traditional society, in fact, the bride’s trousseau (costumes, ornaments, woven household effects or copper objects, etc.) is considered as “risk capital” for difficult times.

Also, in quantity as in quality, families work to provide their daughters with valuable outfits: outfits in very large numbers (by tens for light pieces) and for ceremonial costumes, a very great wealth decoration, the embroideries being always in gold and silver thread, not to mention the jewellery.

It is all this wealth that is on display at the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions in Monastir.
