The city of Jendouba, named Souk El Arba until April 30, 19664, is a city in northwestern Tunisia located 154 kilometers from Tunis and fifty kilometers from the Algerian-Tunisian border.
It is located in the valley of the Medjerda in the center of a fertile plain.
Capital of the governorate that bears its name, it is the most important urban area in the North-West of Tunisia.
With its houses in Mediterranean architecture, with square shapes and one floor, Jendouba, a town of 60,000 inhabitants, does not think much of tourism, despite its proximity to the Roman site of Bulla Regia. An industrial milk factory “LAINO” has replaced the old sugar factory (beets) and the production of baking powder. But here, it is agriculture that dominates: field crops of wheat, potatoes, carrots, etc.
The weekly Wednesday souk gives it a certain authenticity. The stalls invade the main street and its surroundings, on each side of the railway line which crosses the village. In addition to the usual shops, there is a shoe and clothing souk in Jendouba and, on a completely different note, a mosque with an octagonal minaret, typical of the Ottoman era.
The economy of Jendouba and its region is therefore historically based on cereal growing, livestock farming, market gardening and arboriculture, even if since the creation of the industrial zones of Bulla Regia and El Ertiah we have witnessed a gradual industrialization of Jendouba and its agglomeration.
In the surroundings, 17 km from Ghardimaou towards the northwest, the El Feidja national park has an integral protection zone of 174 ha for the safeguarding of Barbary deer.
