Camel trek in the tunisian desert

Camel trekking in the desert of Tunisia desert is a journey through time to discover the spirit of caravans… With an arrival in Djerba, Tozeur or even Tunis, take advantage, we will provide you with experienced men born with sand in their eyes and having grown up in this endless sea of dunes.

Men who know and perfectly master the laws that govern the desert, its fascinating sides and its dangers too… They will offer you both protection and security while making you live unforgettable moments behind the scenes worthy of those of a film such as The Queen of the desert, under a clear, starry sky where the Milky Way seems close at hand.

No experience is comparable to a camel trek or a camel ride in the heart of the Sahara to the rhythm of the rhythmic steps of our faithful dromedaries.

Just as caravans do not have randomness in the desert, we will have a starting point, an ending point and daily stages to cover. Depending on the distances and the difficulties of the terrain, we will walk together between 4 and 6 hours.

The day will be punctuated mainly by sunrise and sunset, these two absolutely unique moments to live in full consciousness.

Program

Day 1: Towards your First Wild Bivouac

Randonnée chamelière au désert tunisien

Our team will pick you up from your hotel around 8:00 AM to embark on an unforgettable desert adventure. You’ll be traveling in a privatized 4×4, tracing the footsteps of the Bedouins as you journey through the majestic dunes of the Sahara Desert.

Around midday, you will stop in Douz for a traditional lunch, where you’ll have the opportunity to savor local flavors before continuing your journey toward Bir El Haj, the gateway to the vast desert. Here, around 3:00 PM, you will meet the camel drivers who will be your guides for the next leg of your adventure.

As you arrive at Bir El Haj, prepare to immerse yourself in the timeless traditions of the Bedouins. The camel drivers will greet you warmly and help you get acquainted with your new environment and your loyal companions, the dromedaries. Once you’ve settled into the rhythm of the desert, you’ll embark on a serene camel trek, swaying gently with the movements of these majestic creatures as you traverse the golden sands.

As the sun begins its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, you’ll assist in setting up camp in the middle of nowhere where silence will be king.
Together with the camel drivers, you’ll pitch the traditional tents, gather firewood, and light the campfire that will be the heart of your evening. The group will work together to prepare dinner, which will be cooked right there in the desert, featuring the famous sand bread—bread baked in the sand and embers, a true desert delicacy.

The evening will be spent under a blanket of stars, their brilliance undiminished by city lights. You’ll have the chance to share stories, enjoy the tranquil ambiance, and simply marvel at the vastness of the night sky. As the fire crackles and the night deepens, you’ll retire to your tent, where the only sound to accompany you will be the profound silence of the desert. Embrace the serenity as you drift off into a peaceful sleep, cradled by the tranquility of the Sahara.

Accommodation : Bivouac under the stars.

Day 2 : Immersion in the Desert

Randonnée chamelière au désert tunisien

Awaken gently as the first rays of sunlight warm the dunes, a peaceful start to your day in the desert.

Gather around the fire as the Berber guides prepare a traditional sand-baked bread for breakfast, offering you an authentic taste of the Sahara.

With the caravan ready, we set off on our journey to the next camp, marking the start of today’s adventure. For the next two to three hours, you’ll walk at a leisurely pace, soaking in the vast desert landscapes and the shifting sands that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

Whenever you feel weary, your trusted companion, the dromedary, will kneel down gracefully, ready to carry you onward.

Midday brings a well-deserved pause for lunch, providing a chance to rest in the shade and share stories.

After the break, we continue for another two hours, traversing the golden dunes, as the sun begins its descent, casting a warm glow over the desert.

By late afternoon, we reach our bivouac spot, nestled between towering dunes. As the sun sets, we set up the tents, creating a small oasis in the middle of the vast wilderness.

The camel drivers will already have lit the fire and prepared a delicious breakfast to start the day right.

We’ll then follow the rhythm of our caravan, walking alongside our faithful camels through the dunes.

A light lunch will be served along the way before continuing our trek towards the campsite.

Upon arrival at El Biben, you will help set up the tents and may participate in preparing dinner, whether by gathering firewood or learning to cook traditional desert dishes.

As always, we’ll follow the well-established pace of the camels, but today the walk will be a bit faster as we make our way to the camp, where a refreshing shower awaits.

By sunset, you’ll reach Zmela camp, nestled in a stunning setting between fine sand dunes. You’ll settle into your tents, take your showers, have dinner, and enjoy another Saharan evening under the stars.

Journey time: 6 to 8 hours

Day 5 : The Hot Spring and the Troglodyte Village

Our first stop will be at the Ksar Ghilane oasis, where you’ll enjoy some free time among the palm trees and a swim in the natural hot spring.

There’s also the option of a quad ride through the dunes (extra cost, payable on-site).

We’ll then continue towards the famous village of Matmata, renowned for its troglodyte dwellings, with a photo stop at the Berber village of Tamazret along the way.

Upon arriving in Matmata, we’ll be welcomed into a local home with rosemary tea, olive oil, and honey offered by our host.
